East leads #WyndhamCup after first day

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - The first day of the 28th Wyndham Cup lived up to the excitement, as the East Team holds an 8.5-6.5 lead heading into Thursday at Mayacama Golf Club.

The West Team got off to a quick start in the morning four-ball matches, leading in six matches to the East Team’s one once all matches had teed off on No. 1. Midway through the morning, the East Team came roaring back with a lead in five matches to West’s three.

The first match of the day went the distance to give the East Team its first point of the day. John Pak of Scotch Plains, New Jersey, and Garrett Barber of Stuart, Florida, took the lead for the East on No. 2 until Texans Shuai Ming Wong of The Woodlands, and Cole Hammer of Houston, squared it up on No. 7. The West held the lead on Nos. 9 through 15 before the East squared the match again. Barber clinched the East team’s first point with his third eagle of the day on No. 18.

“It’s really important to have people that are comfortable going out first because there’s so much on the first tee and early on,” Barber said on the veteran duo’s 12-under-par 60 on the day. “It’s important to get some momentum. With the finish we had, I think it will carry a lot of momentum into the afternoon.”

The East took another five morning matches to the West Team’s four to keep it tight heading into the afternoon’s mixed foursome matches.

The West kicked off the afternoon mixed foursome matches with a 2&1 win over the East. Future UCLA Bruins Paphangkorn Tavatanakit of Van Nuys, California, and Sean Maruyama of Encino, California, were 2-down through No. 12 before turning up the heat to go 2-0-0 for the day. The pair had their morning partners as afternoon caddies, as Clay Seeber and Alyaa Abdulghany, both of Newport Beach, California, carried the bags.

“Teamwork is critical for this week,” the reigning Rolex Junior Player of the Year said. “We definitely had each other out there, with Alyaa by my side. We made a really good team, and I’m glad it’s going well for my first Wyndham Cup.”

Thursday will feature 10 foursomes matches in the morning and five mixed four-ball matches in the afternoon. The Wyndham Cup will conclude Friday with 20 singles matches. The West Team needs 25 points to retain the Wyndham Cup, while the East needs 25 1/2 points to win.
