As the summer season begins to wind down, AJGA tournaments in five states and Canada added 12 juniors to the winner’s circle this week.
AJGA Junior at Fiddler’s Elbow – Jack Wall of Brielle, New Jersey, secured his first AJGA victory with a tournament-total 8-under-par 208. The University of South Carolina verbal commit carded six birdies during the final round for a 6-under-par 67. Wall has had five AJGA top-10 finishes and is currently No. 182 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings. Kelly Sim of Edgewater, New Jersey, earned her fifth career AJGA victory finishing at 16-under-par 200. The 17-year-old Northwestern University verbal commit finished with three eagles and 16 birdies for her second AJGA win of 2017. The Rolex Junior All-American is currently No. 42 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings and tied the Girl’s AJGA 54-hole record.
Under Armour® Canadian Championship – Garrett Tighe of Algonquin, Illinois, earned his first AJGA title after a grueling four-hole playoff in the Boys Division. The 17-year-old went wire-to-wire, finishing at 1-under-par 206 to reach the sudden-death playoff against Kyle Chung of Brampton, Ontario, and William Duquette of Laval, Quebec. Tighe parred all four playoff holes to claim the title. Susan Xiao of (China) Surrey, British Columbia, earned her second national junior golf title in less than a week after winning the Canadian Junior Girls Championship on August 4. The 15-year-old went wire-to-wire recording six birdies and an eagle to finish at 2-under-par 205. Xiao has competed with the AJGA since 2015 and tallied eight top-15 finishes.
AJGA Junior at Forest Lake presented by Tom Holzer Ford – Cade Breitenstine of Akron, Ohio, earned his first-career AJGA title at the AJGA Junior at Forest Lake presented by Tom Holzer Ford. The 16-year-old carded at least five birdies in each round of the event to finish at 7-under-par 206. In his three-year AJGA career Breitenstine has earned five top-20 finishes. Britta Snyder of Ames, Iowa, earned her first AJGA victory as well, finishing at 4-over-par 217. The 15-year-old Baylor University verbal commit tallied 10 birdies to earn the title. Snyder has competed with the AJGA since 2014 and has earned 10 top-15 finishes.
Cameron McCormick Junior All-Star – James Roller of Jenks, Oklahoma, survived a three-player sudden-death playoff to claim the Boys Division title. The 15-year-old posted 14 birdies to finish at 8-under-par 208 to earn a spot in a playoff with Hunter McDonough of Spicewood, Texas, and Eli Tran of Lubbock, Texas. Roller would birdie the par-5 No. 9 to claim the victory. Macy Fox of Austin, Texas, earned her second AJGA title of 2017 after a win at the Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands. The 15-year-old tallied 11 birdies to finish five strokes ahead of the field at 5-under-par 211. Since 2014, Fox has recorded six top-15 finishes.
Greg Norman Champions Golf Academy Junior Championship – Connor Burgess of Lynchburg, Virginia, earned his first-ever AJGA title by way of sudden-death playoff. The 2017 graduate carded 12 birdies to claim a share of the lead in all three rounds. The Virginia Tech commit carded a birdie on the first playoff hole to defeat William Wann of Birmingham, Alabama. Christine Wang of Houston, earned her first AJGA victory at even-par 216. The 15-year-old recorded a tournament-total nine birdies to win by three strokes. Wang has earned 11 top-15 finishes in her three-year AJGA career.
Under Armour® / Alison Lee Championship – Sun-Yi Lu of New Taipei City, Taiwan, won the Boys Division at 8-under-par 208. The 18-year-old carded a tournament-total 12 birdies and an eagle to earn the title by one stroke. The Under Armour® / Alison Lee Championship is Lu’s second AJGA win of 2017 after winning the AJGA Senior Showcase. Irene Kim of La Palma, California, earned her second-career AJGA title by two strokes at 5-under-par 211. The 16-year-old tallied three final-round birdies to retain her second-round lead. Kim has earned five top-15 finishes in her four-year AJGA career.
