MEIERDIERKS HAS ADVANTAGE GOING INTO FINAL ROUND AT 146
Freeman edges out leader to take the Girls Division lead at 154


BOLINGBROOK, ILL- Eric Meierdierks of Wilmette, Ill., shot an even-par 72 for a two-day total of 146 to lead the Boys Division of the AJGA Chicago Junior at Bolingbrook. In the Girls Division, Ashley Freeman of Belleville, Ill., shot a 1-over-par 73 to lead the Girls Division at 154.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Chicago Junior at Bolingbrook features 99 juniors, 75 boys and 24 girls, from 16 states and two from Canada. Forty-six of the juniors are from Illinois.

Meierdierks round was highlighted by an eagle on No. 12 after hitting his drive through the fairway, followed by a three-iron within three feet of the hole. Meierdierks had birdies on Nos., 4, 16 and 18, had 28 putts for the day and hit 12 greens.

"I putted really well today and hit a lot of greens," said the William and Mary signee. "That really helped me out today. Hopefully I can play well again tomorrow."

Meierdierks recently placed 10th in the AJGA Buick Junior Open presented by Golfweek.

Rounding out the Boys Division top five are Henry Rowland of Lake Bluff, Ill., and Daniel Woltman of Beaver Dam, Wis., tied for second at 148 and tied for fourth are Andrew Shiels of Rockford, Ill., and John Kelly of Saint Louis, Mo., at 149.

In the Girls Division, Freeman notched birdies on Nos. 4, 12 and 14 and had 28 putts for her round.

"Conditions were a lot better today," said the 15-year-old. "My chipping and putting worked much better for me today without the wind."

"Going into the final round tomorrow I hope I can play as good as today, stay ahead and play my own game."

Recently Freeman placed third in the AJGA Lockton Kansas City Junior in Overland Park, Kan.

Rounding out the Girls Division top three are Noriko Nakazaki of Hanover Park, Ill., at 77-78-155 and Chaneng Joe of Poway, Calif., at 80-80-160.

The Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program provides financial assistance to junior golfers who wish to play in AJGA events. Its goal is to give top-flight golf opportunities to young golfers regardless of financial resources. This program helps to fulfill the AJGA’s mission of developing young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age.
