Jarvey, McCready and Jenson in three way tie for second

PATTERSON, Calif. – Grant Doverspike of Bakersfield, Calif. got off to a bit of a slow start, but kicked it into high gear to take the lead during Saturday’s first-round of the Ashworth Junior at Diablo Grande.  The 15-year-old used three birdies in four holes on the back nine to produce a splendid opening-round score of 4-under-par 68.

The fourth-annual Ashworth Junior at Diablo Grande is a 36-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Diablo Grande’s Legends West Course.  The tournament includes 87 players from 10 states, including 70 from the host state of California.

The AJGA’s Ashworth Junior Series is designed specifically for first-time AJGA members or those members who have not yet participated in an AJGA Open event, AJGA Invitational or Nike Junior All-Star Series event in the current calendar year and/or the previous calendar year.

“The rough is really tough here, and I was able to hit my driver straight and keep it in the short grass,” Doverspike said. His strategy proved to be a successful one, as the junior carded six birdies and only two bogeys on the way to his 68.

Doverspike’s most important stretch of holes was undoubtedly the start of the back nine where he chipped in for birdie on  No. 10, before sinking birdie putts on Nos. 12 and 13.

“I really stuck some iron shots today,” Doverspike said.

Finishing three shots behind Doverspike, in a three-way tie for second place were Erik Jarvey of Palmdale, Calif., Kenneth McCready of Placerville, Calif., and Dane Jenson of Pleasant Grove, Utah. Jarvey, McCready and Jenson each carded 1-under-par 71’s and will be paired with Doverspike in tomorrow’s final-round.

The final-round of the Ashworth Junior at Diablo Grande will begin with a 9:30 a.m. start Sunday morning.
