CARPENTER NAILS DOWN WIN BY SHOOTING FINAL-ROUND 68 AT
MEDICUS POSTSEASON JUNIOR AT ALEXANDRIA

ALEXANDRIA, La. — Alex Carpenter of Little Rock, Ark., fired a final-round 4-under-par 68 to win the Medicus Postseason Junior at Alexandria by one shot over Henry Plager of Indianapolis.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Postseason Junior at Alexandria was held at OakWing Golf Club. Part of the Medicus Preseason/Postseason Junior Series, the tournament was a 36-hole stroke play event and consisted of 75 boys, ages 12-18, from 18 states, including 11 players from Louisiana. The par-72 golf course was playing to 6,745 yards.

Carpenter entered the final round three shots off the lead. Carpenter, 15, made a birdie on the sixth hole, and shot a 1-under-par 35 on the front nine. Carpenter made birdies on three of his first five holes on the back nine, finishing that side with a 3-under-par 33 to shoot 4-under-par 68 for the round and 143 for the tournament. Carpenter, who only had 25 putts during the final round, said that his putting was the key to his good play.

“I have been hitting the ball well, but I have not been able to get any putts to drop,” Carpenter said. “Today, the putts were falling, so it was a really fun day.”

Carpenter, who was playing in his first career AJGA event, said he was thrilled to win the tournament.

“It feels really great to win the event,” Carpenter said. “I have heard about how prestigious the AJGA is and to win a tournament feels really good.”

Plager recorded two consecutive birdies on hole Nos. 3 and 4, and finished the front nine with an even-par 36. He added two more birdies on the back nine to shoot an even-par 36 on the back nine as well. The Indianapolis native finished the event with a two-day total of 144. Plager said that even though he did not win, he was happy with the way he played during the tournament.

“I feel like I played two good rounds,” Plager said. “I did not leave anything out on the course. I would have loved to win, but I'm happy with the way I played.”

Ethan Savoy of Broussard, La., shot a final-round 71 to finish the event in third place, four shots behind the winner. Brian Hwang of Hauppauge, N.Y., Cory Crump of Peachtree City, Ga., and Sean Keller of Babylon, N.Y., each finished the event at 4-over-par 148. Parham Booker of Pace, Fla., Dan Kellermann of Jacksonville, Fla., Kevin Garbizo of Coral Springs, Fla., Robert Schmidt, also of Coral Springs, and Nicholas Deaver of Waco, Texas, finished the event tied for seventh with a two-day total of 149. Each of the top-10 finishers earned one tournament exemption to be used in a future AJGA event.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The largest Association of its kind, the AJGA has a junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 50 states and 30 foreign countries.

The Medicus Preseason/Postseason Series is designed for new AJGA members or members who have yet to play in an AJGA event. The series provides an opportunity for members to gain status in Performance Based Entry, which in turn will increase their ability to play in future AJGA events.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex Watch USA, which enters its third decade of support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. More than 160 former AJGA juniors currently play on the PGA and LPGA Tours and have compiled more than 300 wins. AJGA alumni include Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Davis Love III, Mike Weir, Charles Howell III, Jim Furyk, Candie Kung, Grace Park, Cristie Kerr and Paula Creamer.
