DROLSON BIRDIES FINAL TWO HOLES TO CARD 1-UNDER-PAR 143 AND SNATCH FIVE-STROKE WIN
Honeycutt fires 5-under-par 139 and holds off late charge to earn two-shot victory
RANCHO MIRAGE, Calif. — Kaitlin Drolson of Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., carded a final-round 1-over-par 73 and a tournament total of 1-under-par 143 to take top honors by five shots at the Medicus Preseason Junior at Rancho Mirage. In the Boys Division, Tim Honeycutt of Placerville, Calif., seized a two-stroke win after a final-round 1-over-par 73 and a 5-under-par 139 tournament total.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Medicus Preseason Junior at Rancho Mirage was a 36-hole stroke play event held at the Westin Mission Hills Resort's Gary Player Signature Course. The 84-player field featured players from eight different states. The Girls Division played the Gary Player Signature Course at 5,842 yards, while the Boys Division played it at 6,904 yards.
Drolson, who hit all 14 fairways and 12 total greens to stay consistent throughout the day, made clinching birdies on Nos. 17 and 18 to seal the victory.
“It was a rough start and I couldn't make much, but it was nice to not play my best and still hang on to win,” said Drolson, who won her first-ever AJGA event. “I've had six second-place finishes in the last eight months, so it's so nice to finally win and it feels so good right now.”
Alison Lee of Valencia, Calif., finished second in the Girls Division with a 148, while Brittany Mai of Poway, Calif., took the third spot with a 149.
In the Boys Division, Honeycutt, who started the day with a three-shot lead, was up by just one stroke going into the No. 14 hole. He then played his final five holes in 1-under-par to seize his first-ever AJGA win.
“It was a struggle throughout the day, but I brought it back at the end of the round,” said Honeycutt. “I just told myself to hit good shots and not let him beat me. It's really great to win and I can't wait to play in my next event.”
Fletcher Sams of La Canada, Calif., seized second with a 3-under-par total of 141. Mario Clemens of Beverly Hills, Calif., Trent Kaahanui of Tempe, Ariz., Kevin Penner of Sammamish, Wash., and Jeff Petroff of Tualatin, Calif., each tied for third place with 2-under-par 142s.
