WEATHER CANCELS FINAL ROUND AT SMITHFIELD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP
NEW CASTLE, Pa. — Cory Mehl of Seattle and Joy Kim of Pinole, Calif., the 36-hole leaders at the Smithfield Junior Championship, were awarded the tournament titles after storms forced the cancellation of Thursday's final round.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Smithfield Junior Championship was a 36-hole stroke-play event held at New Castle Country Club in New Castle, Pa. The 99-player field featured players from 22 states and Canada. The Boys Division played the event at 6,587 yards, while the Girls Division played at 6,029 yards.
Threatening weather forced the evacuation of the course at 1:40 p.m. After almost two hours of delay, the Tournament Committee decided to cancel the round at 3:30 p.m. due to continuing weather concerns and lack of necessary time to reasonably complete the round.
“It's unfortunate that we had to cancel today's final round,” said Tournament Director Julie Kickbusch. “However, we were able to get 36 holes of golf on a great course that truly tested these players' games.”
Also in the Boys Division, Parker Davis of Chadds Ford, Pa., Ryan Mason of Bridgeport, W. Va., and Matt Paterini of Saline, Mich., tied for second place at 1-over-par 145. Brandon Rukin of Pepper Pike, Ohio, Ryan Vince of Charlotte, N.C., and Nicholas Austin of Midlothian, Va., all tied for fifth at 2-over-par 146.
For the Girls Division, Lindsey Solberg of Verona, Wis., finished second at 9-over-par 153, while Meredith Swanson of Roanoke, Va., and Christine Meier of Rochester Hills, Mich., tied for third at 11-over-par 155.
