Keegan grabs medalist honors at Lone Tree Golf Course & Event Center

ANTIOCH, Calif. — Jay Myers of San Jose, Calif., carded a 4-under-par 68 to earn medalist honors in the Boys Division at the Srixon Qualifier for the Golf World West Coast Championship Sunday. In the Girls Division, Brenna Keegan of Bakersfield, Calif., posted a 6-over-par 78 to finish in the top spot.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Golf World West Coast Championship Srixon Qualifier was an 18-hole stroke play event held at Lone Tree Golf Course & Event Center. The 91-player field featured players from 9 states. The course was played at 6,463 yards in the Boys Division and 5,802 yards in the Girls Division.

Despite a very windy day, Myers credited a solid short game for his low score in the shotgun start event. He gained momentum after eagling No. 8 and following with a birdie on No. 9. Myers said he was very pleased with his round and excited about gaining entry into this week's tournament.

“I will try to keep the same thought process as I did today — stay patient and just go play,” Myers said about his tournament strategy.

Other qualifiers in the Boys Division included: Timothy Harkins of Alameda, Calif., Justin Yu of Montrose, Calif., Michael Weaver of Fresno, Calif., Stewart Hagestad of Newport Beach, Calif., Austin Roberts of Carmichael, Calif., John Young Kim of Cypress, Calif., Johnny Henno of Solvang, Calif., J.P. Park of La Habra, Calif., John Catlin of Carmichael, Calif., Kyle Souza of Livermore, Calif., and Quinn Gruber of Aptos, Calif. Both Weaver and Kim opted to take an AJGA Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event.

Keegan, who will make her AJGA debut this week, said she hoped for a solid short game coming into the Qualifier. She did just that, making back-to-back 15-foot birdie putts on Nos. 1 and 18.

“I really wanted to putt well,” Keegan said. “I was just trying to get the ball close to the hole.”

Keegan also will play in this week's event and said she plans to work on her mental game before the first round.

“I'm going to try to stay patient and not overeact about little things on the course,” she said.

Other qualifiers in the Girls Division were Stephanie Hu of Cerritos, Calif., and Elizabeth Doty of Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. Daniela Okino of Elk Grove, Calif., also qualified but opted to take an AJGA Tournament Exemption instead of playing in the tournament this week.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. Rolex Watch USA, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.
