PRESLEY TAMES TOUGH COURSE AT HORSESHOE BAY FOR FIRST ROUND LEAD
HORSESHOE BAY, Texas — Andrew Presley of Fort Worth, Texas, fired an even-par 37-34—71 in the first round of the Stars of Texas Junior presented by Horseshoe Bay Resort Tuesday. He leads the Boys Division by three-strokes going into the second round. Meredith Swanson of Roanoke, Va., leads by one-stroke in the Girls Division after carding a 39-38—77 .
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Stars of Texas Junior presented by Horseshoe Bay Resort is a 54-hole (36-hole cut) stroke play event being held at Horseshoe Bay Resort — Ram Rock Course. The tournament field features 102 boys and 42 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states, Mexico, Venezuela and British Columbia. The Boys Division is playing the par-71 course at 6,745 yards, while the Girls Division is playing the course at 5,961 yards.
Sitting at 2-over-par after eight holes is good for the Robert Trent Jones designed Ram Rock Course. Presley made the most of his early start with birdies on Nos. 9 and 10 sending the 16-year-old back to even-par. Presley also birdied No. 14 while hitting 15 greens and only missing one fairway today. Avoiding rock gardens and hazards were only part of his strategy.
“I just played to have fun,” Presley said. “I thought if I shot under 75 I'd be in pretty good shape. The greens are tough here, I tried to lay up on par-5s and take my chances on par-4s.”
Mitchell Griffin of Driftwood, Texas, is in second place after shooting a 3-over-par 74. Colton Staggs of Tulsa, Okla., tied with Vincent Anagnos of Round Rock, Texas, at 4-over-par 75. Brian Dwyer of Southlake, Texas, Santiago Gavino of San Luis Potosi, Mexico, Tommy Mitchell of The Woodlands, Texas, Mauricio Garcia of Laredo, Texas, Neil Dufford of Midland, Texas and Tyler DuBay of Frisco, Texas, all tied for fifth at 5-over-par 76.
In the Girls Division, Swanson improved from the first nine to the second nine, 39-38—77. No. 4 was her best hole of the day, a tee shot that landed one foot from the cup and settled at four feet was knocked in for birdie. The 17-year-old junior hit her irons well and hit 10 greens with 32 putts lifting her to the top of the Girls Division leaderboard.
“The greens are really tricky, you have to putt smart,” Swanson said. “I haven't been playing much lately because I've been practicing for this tournament with my coach for two weeks.”
Gabrielle Balit of, Bradenton, Fla., sits in second place at 7-over-par 78. Tying for third place were Victoria Vela of Mansfield, Texas, Kelsey Vines of, St. George, Utah and Kelly Drack of Melbourne, Fla., with 8-over-par 79.
