Alonso still on top in Girls Division at Mystic Rock

FARMINGTON, Pa. Andrew Lister of Haymarket, Va., continued solid play on his way to a second-round 4-over-par 76 Wednesday that will keep him atop the leaderboard heading into the final round. Alexander McMahon of Naples, Fla., joins Lister at 2-over-par 146 after a steady round of 1-over-par 73 in round two. Regina Alonso of Huixquilucan, Mexico remains the leader by one in the Girls Division with scores of 75-79—154.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Nemacolin is being played at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort’s Mystic Rock Course. The tournament field consists of 97 players, 75 boys and 22 girls ages 12-15, from 23 states, Mexico and Canada. The Boys Division is being played at 6,807 yards and the Girls Division at 6,005 yards.

Lister, 15, followed up his first-round 70 with a 4-over-par 76 that included birdies on Nos. 4, 5 and 6 after consecutive approach shots on Nos. 1, 2 and 3 landed within 15 feet but provided no birdies.

“I was hitting really good shots, and started off well,” Lister said. “I finally made putts on four through six but then a double bogey on No. 9 set me back a little.”

McMahon copied Lister’s results on Nos. 4, 5 and 6 with three consecutive birdies of his own after bogeys on Nos. 1 and 2 to start the day. He opened with a 2-under-par 34 on the front nine before going on to shoot 3-over-par on the back.

“I had four bogeys in a row on the back,” McMahon said. “I wasn’t hitting the ball great, but my putting was pretty good and helped me to my last birdie on No. 16 that really saved me.”

One stroke back of Lister and McMahon in a tie for third are Motin Yeung of Orlando, Fla., and Tom Lovelady of Birmingham, Ala., at 3-over-par 147. A four-way tie for fifth includes Charlie Saxon of Tulsa, Okla., Christopher Ingham of Pinecrest, Fla., Jake Mondy of Blacksburg, Va., and Boo Timko of Girard, Ohio at 5-over-par 149.

Alonso, 15, was unable to find herself doing anything very well, but was also able to avoid any major flaws throughout her round.

“The strategy that you need for this course is what makes it difficult,” Alonso said. “Tomorrow I am going to focus on not having double bogeys, because that is what makes the score add up.”

In the Girls Division, Augusta James of Tamworth, Ontario is alone in second at 13-over-par 82-75—157, just three-strokes back of Alonso. In third place is Laura Murray of Tipp City, Ohio at 15-over-par 77-82-- 159.
