GRIMES TAKES FIRST-ROUND LEAD AT THE JUNIOR ALL-STAR AT MARSHALLIA RANCH
VANDENBERG AFB, Calif. — Patrick Grimes of Palo Alto, Calif., carded a 2-under-par 70 to take the first-round lead in the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch. Yueer Cindy Feng of Orlando, Fla., tallied two birdies to take the Girls Division lead by one stroke.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch is a 54-hole stroke play event held at the Marshallia Ranch Golf Course. The tournament field consists of 93 boys and 27 girls, ages 12-15, from 13 states and Canada. Eighty-seven hail from the home state of California. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 layout at 6,743 yards, while the Girls Division is playing at 5,669 yards.
Grimes tallied five birdies and three bogeys in his first 18 holes of play, crediting his score to hitting the fairways.
“If you hit the fairways well, this course is not that hard,” said Grimes. “I gave myself a lot of opportunities to make birdie and I took advantage of them.”
Kevin Carnegie of Oceanside, Calif., shot a 1-under-par 71 to put himself in second place behind Grimes. Patrick-Reilley McMahon of Santa Maria, Calif., is in third place after carding even-par 72 and Brian Campbell stands in fourth place with 1-over-par 73. Austin Roberts of Carmichael, Calif., Zachary Wright of Phoenix, Nick Tremps of San Antonio, Texas, Kraig Mcleod of Pebble Beach, Calif., and Bjorn Kallerud of Moraga, Calif., are all tied for fifth with 2-over par 74s.
Feng managed to battle through the afternoon winds to post a solid first-round score of 2-over-par 74.
“The wind was difficult because it kept changing, so I had to keep adjusting my swing,” Feng said. “I need to pay more attention to it tomorrow and do better with my club selection.”
Rochelle Chan of Carson, Calif., and Marissa Borja of Spring Valley, Calif., both are tied for second after the first round with 3-over-par 75s.
