Herr Finishes Strong to Claim Win at the Killington Junior Golf Championship
Liu captures the Girls Division at Green Mountain National Golf Course

KILLINGTON, Vt. — Zachary Herr of New Hope, Pa., finished with an 8-under-par 205 for a seven-stroke victory in the Boys Division at Green Mountain National Golf Course. Yu Liu of Beijing, China, fought off close competition to grab the win in the Girls Division with an 11-over-par 224.

The Killington Junior Golf Championship was a 54-hole stroke play tournament conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Green Mountain National Golf Course. The 99-player field featured 75 boys and 24 girls, ages 12-18, from 17 states, China and Canada. The Boys Division played the par-71 course at 6,584 yards while the Girls Division played at 5,889 yards.

Entering the final round with a massive 11-shot lead, Herr didn't experience the usual amount of pressure most final rounds bring. Playing with an altered strategy, Herr said he wanted to play conservatively.

“I wanted to play it safer today, especially on a few shots,” Herr said. “My main goal was to go out and have fun.”

Carding a final round even-par 71, Herr said he didn't play as well as he did the first two days, but relied on solid iron play to keep his lead safe.

“I didn't play as well as I did the last two days, but I held it together,” Herr said. “I was spraying a lot of my tee shots today. My iron game got me back on the green.”

Herr said he enjoyed Vermont and the great venue made the win even more enjoyable.

“It means a lot to win,” Herr said. “There were a lot of good players here. It was a great week and a great venue. I love Vermont now.”

Finishing in second was Chris Houston of Gilford, N.H., with a 1-under-par 212. In a tie for third was Dylan Healey of Franklin, Tenn., and Zach Zaback of Farmington, Pa., with 1-over-par 214. In fifth place was Kyle Perettine of Boca Raton, Fla., with a 5-over-par 218.

Liu, who held the lead all week in the Girls Division, focused on staying consistent in order to fend off the competition. Admitting that her round was less than stellar, Liu used her tee shots to keep her spirits high.

“I had a terrible start,” Liu said. “However, my driver was very consistent and I hit it a lot further than I did the last two days.”

Carding a final round 6-over-par 77, Liu won by two strokes and claimed her second-straight victory after winning last week at the TEE UP Junior Challenge presented by Kamen Rider Dragon Knight Cup.

“It feels pretty good and means a lot to win,” Liu said. “This is my second win with the AJGA and only my third tournament.”

Placing second with a score of 13-over-par 226 was Isabel Southard of Sharon, Mass. In third place was Jordan Lippetz of Bradenton, Fla., with a 16-over-par 229.
