VANDENBERG AFB, Calif. — Lawrence Tu of Irvine, Calif., held his lead Wednesday, while Minjia Luo of San Diego, Calif., moved to the top of the girls' leaderboard at the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch.
The Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch is one of 10 events in the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series. Specifically designed for boys and girls ages 12-15, the Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series presents opportunities for younger members to develop their skills and earn entry into AJGA Open tournaments. The Series concludes with the Montverde Academy Junior All-Star Invitational over Columbus Day weekend for winners and top finishers in Gary Gilchrist Golf Academy Junior All-Star Series events.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Junior All-Star at Marshallia Ranch is a 54-hole stroke play event held at Marshallia Ranch Golf Course. The 68-player field features 53 boys and 15 girls from seven states, Argentina, Brazil and Canada. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,712 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 5,732 yards.
With rounds of 68-70, Tu sits at 6-under-par 138, good for a two-stroke lead in the Boys Division. Tu made three birdies in his second round, gaining early momentum after firing a 9-iron from 145 yards to tap-in range on the par-4 second hole. After that, Tu gave credit to his putting for his consistent play.
“I was making everything from 15 feet and in,” Tu said.
Lawrence Ree of Redondo Beach, Calif., is two strokes off the lead at 4-under-par 71-69—140. Collin Morikawa of La Canada Flintridge, Calif., is in third place at 70-71—141. Brock Drogosch of Westlake Village, Calif., fired the day's low round at 4-under-par 68, for a two-day total of 142, where he's tied for fourth with Julian Lerda of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
In the Girls Division, Luo improved her second-round score by three strokes, recording 73-70—143 to earn a four-stroke lead. Luo made three birdies on the day, thanks to her putter.
“I made three long putts for birdie,” Luo said. “I saved some pars with my short game, too.”
Starting her round on the 10th hole, Luo made five straight pars before draining a 30-footer for birdie on the 465-yard, par-5 No. 15.
Jocelyn Chia of La Crescenta, Calif., trails by four shots at 77-70—147, while Sophia Chen of Newbury Park, Calif., is in third place at 75-73—148.
