Katrina Prendergast of Sparks, Nevada, won the 4th U.S. Women’s Amateur Four-Ball Championship with her Colorado State University teammate Ellen Secor of Portland, Oregon. The pair erased a 2-down deficit with four holes to play to defeat current AJGA members Lei (Angelina) Ye of (China), Bradenton, Florida, and Ya Chun Chang of (Taiwan) Bradenton, Florida. Ye won the 2018 ANNIKA Invitational USA presented by Rolex in January. Prendergast and Secor came to the 15th tee trailing by two, but the Rams were only saving their best for last. The pair proceeded to win both Nos. 15 and 16 to tie the match before Prendergast secured the comeback victory with a 5-foot birdie putt on the par-5 No. 17. Prendergast is a former AJGA golfer whose best-career finish was T2 at the 2014 AJGA Junior at Lone Tree.

Smith-IP-May8.jpg

Marcus Smith of Rockford, Illinois, fired nine birdies in the final round of the Players Challenge #1 @ Countryside Golf Course. Smith would need all nine of those birdies to edge out fellow AJGA junior Adam Bornstein of Deerfield, Illinois, by one stroke for the victory. Smith opened the tournament with a 1-under-par 71 that included two birdies and an eagle. That left the sophomore one stroke off the lead heading into the final round. Smith didn’t waste any time erasing that deficit as he opened the round with four-consecutive birdies and didn’t look back from there. His ninth birdie of the day on No. 18 would be the one that secured the championship. Smith finished T3 at the 2018 AJGA Junior All-Star at Watters Creek in April.

Trombetta-IP-May8.jpg

Sophia Trombetta of Independence, Ohio, ran away from the competition at the Golfweek Junior Tour at Kent State University. Trombetta fired the only under-par round of the tournament with her first-round 4-under-par 66. She carded five birdies on the round which was enough for a five-stroke lead. The University of Michigan verbal commit added to her lead with a final-round even-par 70 that included two birdies. Trombetta won the Girl’s Division by 10 strokes at 4-under-par 136. The senior finished T5 at the 2017 AJGA Junior at Penn State.

Maspat-IP-May8.jpg

Ian Maspat of San Diego, topped the Boy’s Division (Ages 13-14) by three strokes at the Golden State Tour Junior. Maspat fired the lowest round of the tournament with his opening bogey-free 5-under-par 67. The freshman took a two-stroke lead into the final round, but he quickly added to it with three birdies on the front nine to make the turn at 3-under-par 33. Despite coming in at 3-over-par 39, Maspat’s even-par 72 was enough for the title at 5-under-par 139. The 14-year-old finished second at the 2017 AJGA Junior All-Star at Morongo.
