Three win AT&T Byron Nelson Junior Golf Awards

Not one, not two, but three AJGA members were selected as recipients of the 2018 AT&T Byron Nelson International Junior Golf Awards this week. The AJGA members chosen include Garrett Barber of Stuart, Florida, Trent Phillips of Inman, South Carolina and Sean Maruyama of Encino, California.

The AT&T Byron Nelson Awards recognize top junior golfers around the world that display impressive tournament display, academics, dedication to community service and overall positive character.

The awards were presented to the recipients at the Trinity Forest Golf Club at the 50th anniversary of the AT&T Byron Nelson.

Currently No. 7 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings and a Louisiana State University commit, Garrett Barber has displayed impressive AJGA performances over the past few years. Barber has three AJGA victories along with a 3-0-0 record as a member of the 2017 United States Junior Presidents Cup Team. In addition to his junior golf career, Barber earned a state championship at his high school in 2017.

Trent Phillips is a University of Georgia commit and currently No. 1 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings. In 2017, Philips won his first AJGA Invitational and posted a 3-0-0 record as a member of the 2017 United States Junior Presidents Cup Team. In addition to his golf career, Phillips is a member of National Honor Society and National Beta Club at his high school.

Sean Maruyama, the son of 2002 AT&T Byron Nelson champion, Shigeki Maruyama, was the third chosen to receive the award. Currently No. 21 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings, Maruyama is also a University of California, Los Angeles commit and one of the top students in his class. Maruyama notched a 3-1-0 record as a member of the 2017 Wyndham Cup West Team and a member of the 2017 International Junior Presidents Cup Team.

Marking the 11th anniversary of the awards, Byron Nelson’s legacy lives on through these awards by honoring his commitment and support to mentoring young golfers.
