The 73rd U.S. Women’s Open is underway, featuring eight current AJGA members in the field. Three competitors are seniors, four are juniors and one is a sophomore.

The three AJGA seniors competing in the U.S. Women’s Open include Gina Kim of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Hailee Cooper of Montgomery, Texas, and Elizabeth Wang of San Marino, California. These three seniors combine for a total of 11 AJGA victories and are all Rolex Junior All-Americans.

Kim is a Duke University commit and currently No. 8 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings. Cooper is a University of Texas at Austin commit and currently T45 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings. Lastly, Wang is a Harvard University commit and currently No. 34 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings.

The four juniors representing the AJGA include Yujeong son of (South Korea) Norman, Oklahoma, Dana Williams of Boca Raton, Florida, Linn Grant of Viken, Sweden, and Erica Shepherd of Greenwood, Indiana. Of these four juniors, three are committed to play at the collegiate level.

At just 15-years-old, Lucy Li of Redwood Shores, California, is the youngest AJGA player to compete in the U.S Women’s Open. In 2014 she became the youngest player ever to qualify in the tournament (age 11). Li is currently No. 1 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings and was named a Rolex Junior All-American in 2017.

The U.S. Women’s Open is a four-day tournament where these eight AJGA members have an opportunity to compete on the big stage. To this day, there has only been one amateur to ever win the U.S. Women’s Open. In 1967, a 22-year-old named Catherine Lacoste became the first amateur to win the major championship.
