  • First-round leader Youngin Chun of Cedar Park, Texas, shot a 4-under-par 68, two strokes ahead of second place and four strokes ahead of third. The sophomore is still looking for her first Invitational win. Chun won twice in a breakout 2015 season, first at the Will Claxton Junior and second at the AJGA Junior at The Foundry presented by M&E Contractors, resulting in her first Wyndham Cup appearance.
  • A pair of recent Invitational champions find themselves chasing Chun after the first round. Two strokes back of Chun is Muni He of Rancho Santa Fe, California, who outlasted competition in stroke play and match play at the Polo Golf Junior Classic in November. In fourth place, Hannah O’Sullivan of Chandler, Arizona, is the reigning Rolex Junior Player of the Year and winner of the 2015 Rolex Tournament of Champions and Rolex Girls Junior Championship.
  • Athena Yang of Winter Garden, Florida, was added to the field late Friday afternoon, but came out with a strong showing in the first round with a 1-over-par 73, in a tie for ninth place. In January, Yang was named the recipient of the 2016 ANNIKA Foundation ACE Grant, making it a special appearance for the high school senior.
