Leadership, teamwork and camaraderie are trademarks of a good leader. They are also the subject of Gerry Jones Jr.’s winning essay in the 2017 Succeeding Together contest, sponsored by Wells Fargo.

Jones, a high school sophomore of Suffolk, Virginia, is a member of the AJGA’s Leadership Links program, which helps develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant.

Jones has raised more than $12,000 for The First Tee of Hampton Roads. His winning essay discusses the value of camaraderie in Jones’s life and his work as a mentor for kids at The First Tee of Hampton Roads.

“I strive to set an example for the younger junior golfers and stress the nine core values of the program,” Jones pens in his essay. “I believe that having honesty on and off of the course is a great form of integrity, which shows respect, courtesy and sportsmanship.”

As a reward for winning the contest, Jones will play in the Wells Fargo Championship Pro-Am May 3 with the PGA TOUR pro of his choice.

Jones one day hopes to pursue a career as a scientist or engineer with passions in physics and golf, like fellow AJGA alumnus Bryson DeChambeau. He has competed in three AJGA events, finishing T9 at the 2016 AJGA Preview at Innisbrook (Ages 12-15).
