Wyndham Championship and the AJGA

In 2009, a high school junior from Goshen, Kentucky, hoisted his first AJGA Invitational trophy, as the winner of the FootJoy Invitational, now supported by the Haas family, at Sedgefield Country Club. Next to his best friend, a junior out of Dallas.

Two months later, at the age of 16 years, 3 months and 24 days, that young Kentucky junior would become the third-youngest player to make the cut at a PGA TOUR event on the same course in Greensboro, North Carolina.

And now, he’s hoisting trophies of a different caliber. The latest to raise the Wanamaker Trophy at the PGA Championship, Justin Thomas became the youngest player in PGA TOUR history to shoot a 59 and tied the U.S. Open single-round record of 63 in 2017. But it all started at Sedgefield Country Club, site of the Haas Family Invitational and the Wyndham Championship.

Founded in 1938, the Wyndham Championship is the sixth-oldest event on the PGA TOUR excluding the majors. AJGA alumni like Webb Simpson, Patrick Reed, Davis Love III, Ryan Moore and more have lifted the coveted trophy throughout its rich history.

The Wyndham Championship and the Haas Family Invitational have held ties beyond Thomas’ success. Juniors competing in the AJGA Invitational play the championship setup and enjoy special privileges at Sedgefield like locker-room access. Mark Brazil, tournament director for the Wyndham Championship, also serves on the Foundation Board of Directors for the AJGA.

The Wyndham Championship participants will tee it up Thursday in hopes of taking the last few spots in the FedEx Cup Playoffs on the PGA TOUR. For many, it will also be a homecoming to a site that has supported a pillar of the AJGA schedule for 16 years.
