Davis and Vea Emerge as Leaders of the AJGA Franklin Junior presented by Reliant Bank Talley retains lead at Westhaven Golf Club
FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Taylor Davis of Franklin, Tenn., and Keegan Vea of Evansville, Ind., each shot second-round scores of 3-under-par 69 to jump into a tie for the lead at 1-under-par 143. In the Girls Division, Emma Talley of Princeton, Ky., turned in an even-par 72 on the day, staying even for the tournament with a 144.
The AJGA Franklin Junior presented by Reliant Bank is a 54-hole stroke play event conducted by the American Junior Golf Association at Westhaven Golf Club in Franklin, Tenn. The tournament field consists of 96 players from 17 states, Colombia and Argentina. The Boys Division is playing the par-72 course at 6,857 yards and the Girls Division is playing at 6,000 yards.
After a bogey on No. 13, Davis hit a 4-iron shot from 220 yards out to 10 feet from the No. 14 hole, then sank the putt for eagle.
“After the eagle on No. 14, I really felt that if I kept pushing, I could shoot a low score,” Davis said. “It feels incredible to be in the lead at my first AJGA event, and I just hope that I can keep doing well.”
Vea had four birdies on the day, and made a 25-foot putt on No. 16 for par.
“I birdied Nos. 4 and 5 to start the day and was able to keep the momentum going from there,” Vea said. “It is always great to be in position to win a tournament, and I'm happy to have the opportunity to do that this week.”
Tied for third place after the second round with scores of even-par 144 are Bryan Grisard of Hendersonville, Tenn., Michael Monroe of Franklin, Tenn., Zack Jaworski of Alpharetta, Ga., and Spencer Ciesla of Naples, Fla.
Talley had three birdies on the day, finishing the round at even-par.
“I'm hitting the ball really well this week, and making some good putts,” Talley said. “My goal today was just to do better than yesterday. My score didn't show it, but I feel that I played better, and I hope to finish strong tomorrow.”
In second place is Avery George of Cleveland, Tenn., with a score of 4-over-par 148. Rounding out the Girls Division in third place is Janie Jackson of Huntsville, Ala., with a score of 5-over-par 149
