Fox chases his way into the leader spot in the
Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open

Sims and Narvarro share leader position
at Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club

FAIR OAKS RANCH, Texas — Peter Fox of Mission, Texas, fired a low round score of 5-under-par 67, to claim the leader spot in the Boys Division. In the Girls Division, Marijosse Navarro of San Antonio and Sierra Sims of Austin, Texas share the lead after firing low round scores of 4-under-par 68.

Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the Genesis Shootout present by the Valero Texas Open is a 54-hole stroke play event at Fair Oaks Ranch Golf & Country Club — Live Oak Course. The tournament field consists of 96 boys and 39 girls from eight states and Mexico. The Boys Division plays the par-72 course at 6,943 yards and the Girls Division plays at 6,197 yards.

Fox credits his low round score to his putting and overall heightened confidence after securing his spot in the tournament via Sunday's qualifier.

“Since this is my first AJGA event, it means a lot to be the leader,” Fox said. “I am going to use it as momentum going into the second round.”

Peter Thorseth of Richmond, Texas, carded a 4-under-par 68, and sits behind Fox in second place. Chester Wang of The Woodlands, Texas sits in third after shooting 3-under-par 69. Brendon Jelley of Tulsa, Okla., Kyle Francis of San Antonio, Jake Gorman of Quitman, Texas, Logan Coffman of Lake Quivira, Kan., and Luke Neeley of Mansfield, Texas are tied for fourth after shooting 1-under-par 71.

Sims solid putting and six birdies contributed to her low first-round score.

“I was hitting my drives down the fairway,” Sims said. “I was definitely putting really well today. Every time I had a close putt for birdie, I made it.”

Navarro said she was happy with the way she performed today. She carded a birdie and an eagle on the front nine, and two birdies on the back nine.

“I enjoyed the way I performed today, and I am looking forward to tomorrow's round,” Navarro said. “I hope to continue to improve, that way I can make my mom proud. She always supports me, and I want to win this event for her.”

Summar Roachell of Conway, Arkansas and Alejandra Acosta of Torreon, Mexico sit in third with scores of 1-under-par 71.

The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. The AJGA provides valuable exposure for college golf scholarships, and has an annual junior membership (boys and girls ages 12-18) of approximately 5,000 junior golfers from 49 states and more than 40 countries. To ensure scholarship opportunities for all junior golfers who have the skill, the AJGA created the Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program to provide financial assistance to young players in need.

Titleist, the AJGA's National Sponsor, has been the catalyst and driving force behind the Association's success since 1989. Rolex, which is in its third decade of AJGA support, became the inaugural AJGA Premier Partner in 2004. In 2007, after 12 years of support, Polo Ralph Lauren became the AJGA's second Premier Partner.

AJGA alumni have risen to the top of amateur, collegiate and professional golf. Former AJGA juniors have compiled more than 500 victories on the PGA and LPGA Tours. AJGA alumni include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Hunter Mahan, Phil Mickelson, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Cristie Kerr, Inbee Park and Morgan Pressel.

The second round of the Genesis Shootout presented by the Valero Texas Open will tee off Nos. 1 and 10 from 7:45 — 9:35 a.m. in the first wave and Nos. 1 and 10 from 12:30 — 2:10 p.m. in the second wave. For more information, please contact Tournament Director, Julie Kickbusch at (770) 617-3050.
