Junior Round-up

Alexis Thompson

Isabelle Lendl of Bradenton, Fla., started 2008 off with a bang as she won the Ione D. Jones/Doherty Championship, defeating Curtis Cup team member Meghan Bolger, 1 up, January 19. The event was held at Coral Ridge Country Club in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

A three-time Rolex Junior All-American, Lendl defeated sisters Marika and Daniela, both of Bradenton, on her way to victory. Daniela succumbed to Isabelle during the Round of 16, 4 and 2. Marika lost to Isabelle during the Semifinals, 4 and 2. Marika was the defending champion of this event.

Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Fla., took home medalist honors during the stroke play portion of the Ione D. Jones/Doherty Championship after shooting a 68.

Professional Round-up

AJGA alumnae Jennifer Rosales and Dorothy Delasin were victorious at the Women’s World Cup of Golf, January 20 at the Gary Player Country Club in Sun City, South Africa.

The PGA TOUR’s Bob Hope Chrysler Classic was an exciting tournament won by AJGA alumnus D.J. Trahan. It was Trahan’s second PGA TOUR victory. He overcame a four-shot deficit to defeat fellow former AJGA player Justin Leonard.

The Achieving Competitive Excellence (ACE) Grant program provides financial assistance to junior golfers who wish to play in AJGA events. Its goal is to give top-flight golf opportunities to young golfers regardless of financial resources. This program helps to fulfill the AJGA’s mission of developing young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf.

What is Leadership Links?

Leadership Links is a new program whereby the AJGA is able to further its mission to help develop young men and women by teaching charitable giving skills and service-oriented practices at an early age. This program gives juniors all the tools necessary to donate their time, talent and resources to local charities and the AJGA youth development programs.
