As Mary Ann Cowgur sits at her desk by an open bay window, sunlight pouring through the room, her ever-present smile reflects more than ever. It reflects 35 years of dedication to the American Junior Golf Association. Looking back, she considers not only her own journey, but the growth of an organization she has helped shape along the way.

When Cowgur first joined the AJGA in 1991, the golf world looked very different. Ian Woosnam was ranked No. 1 in the world, and the AJGA had been in existence for almost 13 years. At the time, Cowgur was a stay-at-home mom exploring new opportunities when she came across a job posting in the local newspaper for a membership secretary. She interviewed on a Monday, was hired that Wednesday, and the rest is history.

At the time, the AJGA consisted of 15 full-time staff members and hosted 29 tournaments. Today, the organization has grown to more than 70 full-time staff members and conducts over 150 tournaments in 2026. Cowgur has witnessed that exponential growth firsthand and has remained a steady presence throughout.

“That really is the best part of the job. It’s been a joy to see so many wonderful people from board members, staff members and sponsors from all over. Watching people come through our organization to then grow somewhere else is pretty special.”

Before joining the AJGA, Cowgur had little interest in golf and limited knowledge of the organization beyond the fact that its headquarters was in her neighborhood. That quickly changed. Not long after starting, she fell in love with both the mission and the people behind it.

Now serving as Executive Assistant, Cowgur’s role extends far beyond her job description. Whether she supports Executive Director Stephen Hamblin, coordinating with board members, or making sure each staff member is recognized on their birthday in a personal way, she plays a vital role in shaping the AJGA’s culture. The organization prides itself on being a family atmosphere, and Cowgur helps bring that to life every day.

“The AJGA has always been there for me. From the loss of a daughter to a loss of a grandson but also many happy moments as well… they’ve been there throughout and it’s a joy to know you have that and be apart to give that to someone else is a great thing.”

While much has changed since 1991, Cowgur’s passion for the AJGA has remained constant. Her willingness to help and her consistent positivity have left a lasting impression on those who have worked alongside her.

Cowgur was recognized for her efforts as the 2021 J.R. “Digger” Smith Award recipient. Named in honor of AJGA Chairman of the Board J.R. “Digger” Smith, the award is presented annually to a supporter who demonstrates a strong commitment to the AJGA’s mission of developing young men and women through competitive junior golf. She truly exemplifies a passion for the game and a deep love for her work.

“It’s just a joy... It gives me joy to come to work, so it’s not really work for me,” Cowgur said.

Over the years, Cowgur has also had the opportunity to watch many AJGA juniors grow into some of the game’s most recognizable faces, including Morgan Pressel, Nelly Korda, Tiger Woods and Phil Mikelson. Witnessing that development is something few experience in the sports world.

“I was a standard bearer for Morgan Pressel, a very sweet young lady,” Cowgur said. “I think it’s awesome to just see what she has been able to achieve as a golfer.”

When asked to describe her 35 years at the AJGA, Cowgur pointed to one word: grateful.

“I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to work at the AJGA all these years. I’ve enjoyed getting to know so many wonderful people and create so many lifelong friends.”

While Cowgur expresses gratitude for her time at the AJGA, the sentiment is shared by those around her. Staff members like her have helped shape the organization into the leading force in junior golf. Her professionalism, care for others, and dedication have set an example for everyone she encounters.

“Congratulations to Mary Ann. She has truly made the AJGA the special place that it is today. We love her and I don’t know where we’d be as an organization without her.”
Stephen Hamblin, AJGA Executive Director

After 35 remarkable years, Cowgur’s impact is undeniable. Her story is woven into the fabric of the AJGA and will continue to inspire those who follow.

Congratulations to Mary Ann on an incredible 35 years. Thank you for all you’ve done.
