The American Junior Golf Association announced Sam Burns will host the Sam Burns Classic at The Landings Club in Savannah, Georgia, July 19-22, 2021. The Landings Club will host their first AJGA event when 78 of the best boys and girls (ages 12-19) come from around the world to compete at the top level of junior golf. Burns’ AJGA event comes with a five-year agreement to host the tournament at The Landings Club, securing a top-quality venue for many years to come.
“I am honored to have my name on an AJGA event,” Burns said. “The AJGA was extremely influential in my development as a junior golfer. I look forward to our partnership in this new event for years to come.” Burns was the Rolex Junior Player of the Year in 2014 with a junior golf career that included two Invitational victories and three years of Rolex Junior All-America honors. Burns went on to play college golf at Louisiana State University before turning professional in 2017. Burns broke through on the Korn Ferry Tour in 2018 with a win at the Savannah Golf Championship, now known as the Club Car Championship at The Landings Club—the same venue where he will host his junior golf event.
“We are so excited to have Sam join a long list of former AJGA players who now give back to junior golf by hosting an AJGA event,” said AJGA Southeast Regional Director Shannon Dudzinski. “Sam was an incredible ambassador and a Rolex Junior Player of the Year and we look forward to having his AJGA event for many years.”
The Landings Club features six unique golf courses designed by such masters as Arnold Palmer, Tom Fazio, Arthur Hills, and Willard Byrd. Each course showcases the natural beauty of the coast and works with nature to produce an unforgettable experience. Each course is certified as Audobon Cooperative Sanctuaries by Audobon International. The Deer Creek Course is home to the Club Car Championship, the only Korn Ferry Tour event hosted in the state of Georgia.
“With the addition of The Sam Burns Classic, The Landings Club has now become a stopping point for many of the world’s most elite players on their way to the big show,” said Scott Justman, Director of Golf Operations at The Landings Club. “With now hosting the highest level of junior golf competition—the AJGA Tour, The Final Stage of Korn Ferry Tour Q-School, and the Korn Ferry Tour’s Club Car Championship—we are excited to have tomorrow’s PGA TOUR superstars experience our Club.”
The American Junior Golf Association is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the overall growth and development of young men and women who aspire to earn college golf scholarships through competitive junior golf. AJGA alumni include Rickie Fowler, Sergio Garcia, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods, Paula Creamer, Ariya Jutanugarn, Cristie Kerr, Stacy Lewis, Brittany Lincicome, Anna Nordqvist, Inbee Park, and Lexi Thompson.
“We’re excited to welcome some of the best junior players in the world to Savannah to compete in the Sam Burns Classic at The Landings Club,” said Club Car Championship at The Landings Club Tournament Director Cheyenne Overby. “Savannah and The Landings Club are both major advocates for growing the game of golf, and this is another example of our community’s commitment to giving back. The Landings Club has established itself as a premier destination for golf tournaments, and we’re honored to add the AJGA and its impressive young talent to an already exceptional slate of events for 2021, including the Korn Ferry Tour’s Club Car Championship at The Landings Club later this month and the Final Stage of Korn Ferry Tour Q-School in November.”
The tournament begins like a PGA TOUR or LPGA Tour event with an 18-hole AJGA Qualifying Tournament held on Sunday before the event. This gives players the opportunity to “play their way in” to the main tournament. Monday will feature the official practice round and a Junior-Am fundraising tournament. The tournament will begin Tuesday with the first round and run through Thursday. An awards ceremony will follow the final round.
