Professional Recap

Sam Burns defeated fellow AJGA alum Scottie Scheffler in a playoff at the Charles Schwab Challenge, securing his third win of the season.

The first two rounds didn't make Burns stand out from the field, with a 1-over 71 and a 2-under 68 on his scorecard. Burns played steady on moving day with a 3-under 67 however, which left him seven shots behind the leader Scheffler, who carded a 9-under 131 in the third round.

With 16 players ahead of him to start the round, Burns set out to give himself a chance, which he did with a closing 5-under 65 at Colonial Country Club. His tournament total of 9-under 271 didn't seem to be enough at the time, given there were eight groups ahead of the final twosome and five players on the course at 10-under. However, the increasingly windy conditions at Colonial Country Club held the course firm and kept Burns in it. With the rest of the field falling off, it was Scheffler who closed his round with a birdie on No. 18 to force a playoff.

The playoff was between the two 25-year-old rising stars, with Burns seeking his fourth career title and Scheffler seeking his fifth. Burns secured the win with a 38-foot birdie putt on No. 18.

Burns competed in 29 AJGA tournaments and won three titles. The 2014 First Team Rolex Junior All-American became an AJGA tournament host in 2021. The second edition of the Sam Burns Classic at the Landings Club just wrapped up a successful weekend on May 8.

AJGA alumna Gina Kim went wire-to-wire to win the Inova Mission Inn Resort & Club Championship, her first professional title.

The 2022 Epson Tour rookie kicked off her week with eight birdies and one bogey to card a 7-under 66 on the El Campeรณn Championship Course at Mission Inn Resort & Club. She kept herself steady in the second round, shooting a 4-under 69, which maintained her lead at two shots ahead.

Despite the Duke alum starting her final round with two bogeys on par-4 Nos. 3 and 5, she fought back and carded three more birdies and one bogey. Her final round of even-par 73 was enough to secure her first professional win.

The 22-year-old rising star was a 2017 First Team Rolex Junior All-American. Kim finished in the top five at 14 of the 35 AJGA tournaments she played in, which included two victories.
