Herendeen sets the pace in round one

Max Herendeen of Bellevue, Washington, ceased the opening round advantage in the Boys Division with a bogey-free 8-under-par 63 round. Herendeen's day included three straight birdies on holes Nos. 9-11, propelling him to a back nine score of 5-under-par 30. The round was the lowest of the 16-year-old's AJGA career. In his last AJGA start, Herendeen finished T3 at the AJGA Junior at Canebrake Club.

Garrett Endicott of San Antonio, Texas, and Ty Anderson of Spokane, Washington, finished the day in a tie for second place at 5-under-par 66. Go Nakatsukasa of (Japan) San Diego, California, is in fourth place with a 4-under-par 67. Rounding out the top-5 are Burly Hildreth of Eastsound, Washington, Jeff Seong of Tacoma, Washington, Chanhee Ryu of Pleasanton, California, and Colton Zehnder of Puyallup, Washington, at 3-under-par 68.

In the Girls Division, Alice Ziyi Zhao of (China) Irvine, California, finished eagle-birdie on her final two holes to take the opening round lead with a 8-under-par 64. The 12-year-old carded seven total birdies on the day to go along with the eagle on No. 17. Zhao is currently ranked No. 148 in the AJGA Rolex Rankings. She earned her first AJGA victory at the 2021 AJGA Thunderbird Junior All-Star.

Chasing Zhao are Logan Allen of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Angela Zhang of Bellevue, Washington, each sitting at 5-under-par 67.
