AJGA Junior at Southpointe presented by DICK’s Sporting Goods honored with Hospitality Award

Southpointe Tournament Committee - AJGA Junior at Southpointe presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods - 2021

The AJGA Junior at Southpointe presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods was honored with the AJGA's Hospitality Award for the 2020 season.

Each year, the AJGA recognizes top tournaments, committees, and individuals who produce outstanding work during the previous AJGA season in 15 categories. Awards distinguish the effort of local supporters who make each quality tournament experience possible.

The Hospitality Award is selected based on the overall experience and entertainment for all guests and visitors on-site throughout the week including players, parents, and volunteers. The staff and tournament committee at Southpointe Golf Club went above and beyond to make the tournament week unique and memorable.

The 2020 AJGA Junior at Southpointe presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods was hosted August 3-6 at Southpointe Golf Club in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania. Southpointe hosted the AJGA for the first time in 2019 and has continued to remain one of the best Open tournaments in the Northeast region.

The 2020 Hospitality Award was presented to Chase McClain, the Volunteer Chair.

"We're just excited to have competitive junior golf back and partner with a world-class organization like the AJGA at a club like Southpointe Golf Club, it's a great partnership. Having interned with the AJGA, you see the quality of the organization, the quality of the kids and the life lessons that they're learning traveling around the country competing- that makes it special."

Southpointe brought forth a full tournament committee and even filled additional roles to help with logistics and experience.

All AJGA players each rode in their own golf cart during the tournament to help assist with pace of play and were gifted a 32 oz. Hydroflask, courtesy of DICK'S Sporting Goods.

The local community and media also support the event annually, featuring unique storylines and covering the leaders after each round on local news stations. Visitors were welcomed to Canonsburg with a highway billboard. The committee members also helped guarantee housing for AJGA staff and interns in order to offset tournament expenses.

“Everyone involved locally with the AJGA Junior at Southpointe presented by DICK’S Sporting Goods does such a great job making our players, families and volunteers feel welcomed," Senior Northeast Regional Director Pat Plank said. "The players enjoy an upgraded social activity, additional tournament gift, and plenty of volunteers. It’s a special event we look forward to each year.”

AJGA tournaments are annually honored in the categories of hospitality, fundraising, charitable giving, volunteers, engaged media, and social media. The year’s most outstanding golf professional, superintendent and golf course executive are honored alongside the most game-changing overall event, best new event, and top honorees in each tournament ‘series’ (Preview, Junior All-Star, Open and Invitational). Awards are presented on-site during the tournament week.

In 2021, the AJGA returned to Southpointe for the AJGA Junior at Southpointe presented by DICK'S Sporting Goods from August 2-5 for the third consecutive year of the event.

"I had wanted to bring an event here for almost 10 years and it was always on my heart. It took a lot of time for things to fall into place and when I came back to work in Washington County, it was the first priority on my list. We have a great community here of people that missed having high-level competitive golf to watch. It's good for Washington County, Southpointe Golf Club and the volunteers that love helping out."
