West leads East 11 to 4 after day one

Strong morning four-ball session pushed West to dominate opening day lead
2022 Wyndham Cup - West Team

Plymouth, MA - The 32nd Wyndham Cup opened play on Tuesday morning with four-ball, followed by afternoon mixed foursomes. The West team jumped out to an early lead in the morning winning eight of the ten matches to secure eight points and lead the East team eight to two. The West earned three more points during the afternoon bringing their total to 11 to the East's four.

Since 1990, the Wyndham Cup has brought together 40 of the country’s top junior golfers (20 males and 20 females) in an East versus West team match play tournament. In addition to featuring some of the world’s best junior golfers annually, the Wyndham Cup is known for its iconic host venues. A list that features Old Sandwich Golf Club, Mayacama Golf Club, The Stanwich Club, and Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge.

Old Sandwich Golf Club plays host in 2022 for the fourth time since 2010. Notable alumni who competed in the Wyndham Cup at Old Sandwich include two-time Major champion Collin Morikawa, 15-time PGA TOUR champion Justin Thomas, NCAA Women's Division 1 Individual golf champions Rose Zhang and Rachel Heck, and 4-time PGA TOUR winner Sam Burns.

Before play both teams kicked off the morning with team chants on the starting tee. #GoWest got it started followed by #GoEast.

The defending East team started strong putting the first point of the 32nd Wyndham Cup up on the board. Andrew McLauchlan of Neptune Beach, Florida, and Wyatt Plattner of Sarasota, Florida, grabbed the lead in the match on hole No. 1 and never looked back. The duo kept the match lead or tied the entirety of the match over Jonas Appel of Encinitas, California, and Jacob Sosa of Austin, Texas, until their win on hole No. 15 at 4 & 3.

Augusta National Women's Amateur Champion Anna Davis of Spring Valley, California, teamed up with 2021 Polo Golf Junior Classic at Liberty National champion Kiara Romero of San Jose, California, won their match 2 & 1 against 2022 Rolex Girls Junior Championship winner Kaitlyn Schroeder of Jacksonville, Florida, and University of Southern California commit Bailey Shoemaker of Dade City, Florida. The West girls put up the first point of the day for the West.

2022 AJGA Simplify Boys Championship winner Mahanth Chirravuri of Chandler, Arizona, and University of Texas, Austin, Keaton Vo of Austin, Texas, won match three 4 & 2 over Boyd Owens of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Matt Moloney of Vienna, Virginia.

Pate and Ma captured the lead on hole No. 3 and held a 2-up or better lead the whole morning to secure the second point for the East team.

The West team won the last six matches of the morning four-ball. The biggest upset was in the final match where reigning USGA Women's Amateur Four-Ball Champions Sara Im of Duluth, Georgia, and Thienna Huynh of Lilburn, Georgia, were taken down 5 & 4.

Mixed foursomes in the afternoon saw much closer matches. The West outright took two matches and the East took one. Two matches were tied giving each team another full point.

The West took match one 1-up. Jase Summy and Leigh Chien held their own the front nine going back and forth with Andrew McLauchlan and Sydney Hackett. The West held the lead from hole No. 7 and remained 1-up until their win on No. 18.

Match two went the full 18-holes without deciding a winner. The East pairing of Plattner and Schroeder took on the West's Appel and Davis. It was back and forth all day with both sides bogeying hole No. 18 to halve the match.

Match three was the only outright afternoon point the East squad earned. Roberts and Ma combined to win 2 &1 over West pairing E. Lee and Rao.

The West earned their second whole point of the afternoon in match 4. C. Kim and Zhang-Murphy won 3 & 2 over Moloney and Im.

The final match of the afternoon ended in the second tie of the 2022 Wyndham Cup. Ramos and Shoemaker held the lead much of the day before handing back holes to the West from No. 14 forward. Chirravuri and Koo tied the match on No. 18 with a part to the East's bogey.

After day one the West leads the East 11 to 4. Day two of competition at the 32nd Wyndham Cup will feature morning foursomes and afternoon mixed foursomes. Morning tee times begin at 7:30 a.m. and afternoon tee times at 1 p.m.
