The Wyndham Invitational returns to Sedgefield for the 22nd year

2022 champion, Henry Guan, looks to defend title.

The Wyndham Invitational presented by Odyssey returns to Sedgefield Country Club to bring the 72 top-ranked boys in the Rolex AJGA Rankings to compete in a 72-hole, stroke-play tournament.

This will be the 22nd year in the event's history in Greensboro, North Carolina, and the 15th time that Sedgefield Country Club has hosted the tournament.

Wyndham Invitational Alumni on PGA TOUR
More than 100 PGA TOUR golfers played the Wyndham Invitational early in their careers, including 2020 PGA Championship and 2021 Open Championship winner Collin Morikawa, 2015 Masters champion and FedEx Cup champion Jordan Spieth, 2011 Wyndham Championship winner and 2012 U.S. Open winner Webb Simpson, and 2009 Wyndham Invitational champion and 2022 PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas. Several years from now, some of the golfers playing in this year’s Wyndham Invitational will no doubt compete at the professional level.

Top AJGA Player
Henry Guan, No. 8 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings, is the top player in the field. Guan, the youngest Wyndham Invitational champion, delivered two rounds of 4-under-par 66 in the 2022 championship. In his five 2023 starts, he has four top-eight finishes. The Dallas, Texas, native is only in the class of 2026 and just completed his freshman year of high school. Guan earned his first team honor in the 2022 campaign as a Rolex Junior All-American.

Field Strength
After graduating from high school, many junior golfers begin their transition to college golf by playing amateur events and their final junior tournaments. Seventy-five percent of this year’s Wyndham Invitational presented by Odyssey field is made up of rising seniors, juniors, and sophomores. Ranked players from each class according to the Rolex AJGA Rankings are below:

  • Class of 2024: four of the top-50
  • Class of 2025: four of the top-50
  • Class of 2026: five of the top-50
  • Class of 2027: one player ranked No. 15

Qualifying Tournament
More North Carolina juniors earned entry into the Wyndham Invitational presented by Odyssey through an 18-hole qualifying tournament. The qualifying tournament was played at 7 a.m. on Sunday, June 11 at Crooked Tree Golf Course in Browns Summit, N.C., with a maximum field of 60 golfers.         2022 Tournament Recap
        Henry Guan of Dallas, Texas, won the 21st event by two strokes over 2023 Team TaylorMade Invitational Champion, Cayden Pope of Lexington, Kentucky, at 7-under-par 273. After taking the lead in round two, Guan carded 18 birdies over 72-holes to become the youngest winner of the Wyndham Invitational.

        At No. 8 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings, Guan has four top-ten finishes in five starts in 2023. Some of his highlights in the past year include a top-five finish at the 2022 Polo Golf Junior Classic and becoming a First Team Rolex junior All-American.

        Previous Winners
        The AJGA first hosted an event in Greensboro in 1988 for boys and girls, but the Wyndham Invitational was created in 2002 as a boys-only major opposite the Rolex Girls Junior Championship.

        54-hole Cut
        The 72-player Wyndham Invitational presented by Odyssey will utilize a cut following the third round of play. The top 48 golfers and ties will advance to the final round. A tie after 72 holes will be decided by sudden-death playoff.

        Of the 39 players who have won an AJGA event, a few highlights:

        • Henry Guan of Dallas, Texas, won the 2022 Wyndham Invitational and will look to become the second back-to-back winner of the prestigious event. Guan is seeking his first AJGA title of 2023 and is currently No. 8 in the AJGA Rolex Rankings.
        • Jay Leng Jr. of San Diego, California, won the 2022 The PING Invitational at Karsten Creek Golf Club. The Stanford University commit is currently No. 10 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings.
        • Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, is the youngest player in the field. In his three AJGA events this year, he has two wins and a runner-up finish at the 2023 Team TaylorMade Invitational. At No. 15 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings, Russell is seeking his first AJGA Invitational title this week.
        • Will Hartman of Marvin, North Carolina, tied for fifth at the 2022 Polo Golf Junior Classic and most recently tied for fourth at the 2023 Team TaylorMade Invitational. Hartman made the cut at the 2022 Wyndham Invitational and had back-to-back rounds of 3-under-69. He is currently No. 19 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings.
        • Smith Summerlin of Raleigh, North Carolina, is no stranger to Invitationals. Summerlin won the 2022 Jack Burke Jr. Invitational and is a 2022 Rolex Junior All-American. He is currently No. 21 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings
