PLAYA DEL CARMEN, QR, Mexico - Brooks Simmons of Dallas, Texas, leads the way after tying the lowest 18-hole score in tournament history. During last year's event, Simmons set the record for the lowest tournament round with a 6-under 65 on day two. He repeated that feat again this year, carding another 6-under round that featured seven birdies and one lone bogey.
This 72-player field showcases golfers from nine different countries, including eight Mexican natives. Among these talented players, 29 have committed verbally or through a National Letter of Intent to play collegiate golf. Additionally, the field consists of 10 Rolex Junior All-Americans and 40 past AJGA Champions, emphasizing the high levels of talent at this event.
Simmons, who finished in a tie for second place in the previous year's event, is looking for his first career AJGA victory. The University of Texas commit posted a 1-over-par round on the first day and sat in a four-way tie for ninth place. He opened today's round up with a hot start, recording birdies on four of his first five holes.
After the impressive start, Simmons made a bogey on No. 7 but got the dropped shot back with a birdie on the following hole. The 17-year-old went on to par his next seven holes before knocking in back-to-back birdies on holes Nos. 16 and 17. Simmons made par on the final hole to hold a four-shot lead going into the final day.
Have a day! 👏
