West leads 9.5 to 5.5 after day one

West extends their lead during afternoon mixed foursomes session

Johns Island, SC - The 34th Wyndham Cup began play on Tuesday morning at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek with four-ball, followed by afternoon mixed foursomes. The West team claimed the morning lead, winning five matches to the East team's three. The West secured six points after two matches ended in a tie. The West earned 3.5 more points during the afternoon session, bringing their total to 9.5 to the East's 5.5.

Since 1990, the Wyndham Cup has brought together 40 of the country’s top junior golfers (20 males and 20 females) in an East versus West team match play tournament. In addition to featuring some of the world’s best junior golfers annually, the Wyndham Cup is known for its iconic host venues. A list that features Old Sandwich Golf Club, Mayacama Golf Club, The Stanwich Club, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge and now The Golf Club at Briar's Creek.

While this is the first time in the event's history that The Golf Club at Briar's Creek is hosting the Wyndham Cup, they are no stranger to the AJGA and its' high caliber events. The club has also played host to the 2019 and 2023 Rolex Girls Junior Championship.

Before play, two juniors on each team participated in the ceremonial striking of the tee. Jasmine Koo of Cerritos, California, and Wheaton Ennis of Litchfield Park, Arizona, did the honors for the West, while Megan Meng of Pennington, New Jersey, and Will Hartman of Marvin, North Carolina, had the honor for the East.

The West team started the day strong and secured the first point of the 34th Wyndham Cup. Jasmine Koo, and Kylie Chong of Torrance, California, secured the match on No. 16 at 3&2 over Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Gianna Clemente of Estero, Florida.

Anna Huang of (Canada) Coto De Caza, California, and Elise Lee of Irvine, California secured the second point for the West team 1-up over Amelie Zalsman of Saint Petersburg, Florida, and Sofia Cherif Essakali of Orlando, Florida.

The West team won three additional matches of the morning four-ball session:

  • Nikki Oh of Torrance, California, and Jude Lee of Walnut, California won 3&2 over Ryleigh Knaub of Debary, Florida, and Aphrodite Deng of (Canada) Short Hills, New Jersey
  • Ronin Banerjee of Irvine, California, and Luke Colton of Frisco, Texas won 4&3 over Carson Bertagnole of Pinehurst, North Carolina, and Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island, Florida
  • Kinsley Ni of (China) Los Angeles, California, and Alice Ziyi Zhao of (China) Irvine, California won 2-up over Megan Meng of Pennington, New Jersey, and Thanana Kotchasanmanee of (Thailand) Rome, Georgia

The first East point of the day was claimed by Pennson Badgett of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina, and Jackson Byrd of Saint Simons Island, Georgia. The duo took a quick lead in the match on No. 1 and kept the momentum going to win their match 5&4 on No. 14 over Henry Guan of Dallas, Texas, and Jay Leng Jr of San Diego, California.
Two additional East points were claimed after the morning four-ball matches:

  • Scarlett Schremmer of Birmingham, Alabama, and Mia Hammond of New Albany, Ohio won 2&1 over Asterisk Talley of Chowchilla, California, and Natalie Yen of West Linn Oregon
  • Logan Reilly of Lovettsville, Virginia, and Phillip Dunham of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida won 3&1 over Eric Yun of Menlo Park, California, and Asher Vargas of Spring, Texas

Two of the morning matches were tied, giving each team another full point.

The afternoon mixed foursomes was when the West solidified their day one lead. The West won two matches outright. Three matches ended in a tie after four of the five matches went to No. 18.

The first match of the afternoon started off strong for the East when Byrd and Rudisill held a 1-up lead through the first five holes. Bowen Ballis of The Woodlands, Texas, and Huang of the West team won the next three holes to take the lead on No. 7. Carrying their momentum into the back nine, the duo maintained a 2-up lead through No. 12. The East pairing battled back, winning the last two holes to end the match in a tie.

The following match was the second of the afternoon to end in a tie. Leng Jr and Chong of the West took and early lead on No. 2 and maintained it through No. 15. The East's Badgett and Zalsman won three of the final four holes to finish the match tied.

The third match of the afternoon ended in the West's favor. The match saw steady play with the West's Ronin Banerjee and Natalie Yen holding the early lead they claimed on No. 3. The East's Blades Brown of Nashville, Tennessee, and Scarlett Schremmer fought hard, winning three holes on the back nine but the West took the match 1-up on No. 18 to claim another point.

The following match was dominated by the West's Luke Colton of Frisco, Texas and Alice Ziyi Zhao after winning seven of the first nine holes. The West won 5&4 over the East pairing Carson Bertagnole and Mia Hammond.

The final match of the day ended tied. The East's Phillip Dunham and Aphrodite Deng took the initial lead, holding a 1-up or better lead through No. 10. The West pairing, Michael Riebe of Encinitas, California, and Nikki Oh made a comeback on the back nine. The West took the first four holes after making the turn to hold a 2-up lead through No.15. The East's Dunham and Deng won two of the last three holes to finish the match tied.

After day one, the West leads the East 9.5 to 5.5. Day two of competition at the 34th Wyndham Cup will feature morning foursomes and afternoon mixed foursomes. Morning tee times will begin at 8:00 a.m off Nos. 1 & 10 at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek in Johns Island, South Carolina.
