West holds two point lead heading into singles matches

East makes strong push to cut deficit during morning foursomes

Johns Island, SC - Day two of the 34th Wyndham Cup ends in the West's favor, leading 16 to 14.

In the morning foursomes, the East team made a strong push to cut their deficit in half and take the morning matches 6 to the West's 4.

The most dominate morning round for the East was contested by Carson Bertagnole of Pinehurst, North Carolina, and Logan Reilly of Lovettsville, Virginia. The East duo was paired against Ronin Banerjee of Irvine, California, and Asher Vargas of Spring, Texas. Bertagnole and Reilly claimed eight holes to win the match 5&3 and put up the first point of the day by the East team.

Full results of the East team's morning foursome wins were as follows:

  • Aphrodite Deng of (Canada) Short Hills, New Jersey, and Sofia Cherif Essakali of Orlando, Florida won 2-up over Kinsley Ni of (China) Los Angeles, California, and Anna Huang of (Canada) Coto De Caza, California
  • Elizabeth Rudisill of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Thanana Kotchasanmanee of (Thailand) Rome, Georgia won 4&3 against Kylie Chong of Torrance, California, and Elise Lee of Irvine, California
  • Miles Russell of Jacksonville Beach, Florida, and Will Hartman of Marvin, North Carolina won 1-up over Kihei Akina of Kahuku, Hawaii, and Michael Riebe of Encinitas, California
  • Tyler Watts of Huntsville, Alabama, and Blades Brown of Nashville, Tennessee won 4&2 against Luke Colton of Frisco, Texas, and Henry Guan of Dallas, Texas

The West team's morning foursome wins were as follows:

  • Jude Lee of Walnut, California, and Asterisk Talley of Chowchilla, California won 4&3 against Amelie Zalsman of Saint Petersburg, Florida, and Megan Meng of Pennington, New Jersey
  • Jay Leng Jr of San Diego, California, and Eric Yun of Menlo Park, California won 5&4 against Phillip Dunham of Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, and Tyler Mawhinney of Fleming Island, Florida
  • Wheaton Ennis of Litchfield Park, Arizona, and Bowen Ballis of The Woodlands, Texas won 3&2 against Jackson Byrd of Saint Simons Island, Georgia, and Pennson Badgett of Pilot Mountain, North Carolina

Two of the morning matches were tied, giving each team another full point.

In the afternoon mixed foursomes, both the East and West teams won two matches and tied one, leaving the West to hold a two point leading heading into the final day.

The first match of the afternoon was the only of the five matches to end in a tie. The East's Tyler Watts and Thanana Kotchasanmanee took the early lead on No. 1. The West duo, Henry Guan and Asterisk Talley battled back to bring the match to a tie on No. 13. The match remained tied through the final hole.

The following match landed in the East's favor. The match was tied through the first six holes. The East's Tyler Mawhinney and Ryleigh Knaub took the lead on No. 7 and held on to a 2-up or better lead before capturing the win 2&1 on No. 17 over the West's Asher Vargas and Jude Lee.

The next match was dominated by the East. Miles Russell and Sofia Cherif Essakali claimed the lead on No. 1. After winning the first two holes, the East duo held a 2-up lead through the remainder of the match before closing it out on No. 14 5&4 over the West's Eric Yun and Kinsley Ni.

The fourth match of the afternoon ended with a point for the West team. Wheaton Ennis and Jasmine Koo of the West battled against Will Hartman and Gianna Clemente of the East. The West pairing immediately took the lead on No. 1. After the East won the second hole, the match remained tied until the West reclaimed the lead on No. 8. Ennis and Koo brought home the win on No. 15 4&3 over the East pairing.

The West dominated the final match of the day. After steady play through the first three holes, the West pairing of Kihei Akina and Elise Lee took the lead on No. 4 and did not look back. The duo won 6&4 over the East's Logan Reilly and Megan Meng.

Since 1990, the Wyndham Cup has brought together 40 of the country’s top junior golfers (20 males and 20 females) in an East versus West team match play tournament. In addition to featuring some of the world’s best junior golfers annually, the Wyndham Cup is known for its iconic host venues. A list that features Old Sandwich Golf Club, Mayacama Golf Club, The Stanwich Club, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge and now The Golf Club at Briar's Creek.

While this is the first time in the event's history that The Golf Club at Briar's Creek is hosting the Wyndham Cup, they are no stranger to the AJGA and its' high caliber events. The club has also played host to the 2019 and 2023 Rolex Girls Junior Championship.

After day two, the West leads the East 16 to 14. The West team is looking to retain the cup and take the first Wyndham Cup victory at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek.

Day three of competition will feature 20 singles matches. Morning tee times begin at 8:00 a.m. and run through 9:35 a.m. off Nos. 1 and 10 at The Golf Club at Briar's Creek in Johns Island, South Carolina.
