PLYMOUTH, MA - The 36th Wyndham Cup began early Tuesday morning at Old Sandwich Golf Club with foursomes, followed by mixed foursomes in the afternoon. The West team claimed the morning lead, winning six matches to the East team’s one. The West secured 7.5 points after three matches ended in a tie. The East earned 3.5 more points during the afternoon session, bringing their total to 6, to the West’s 9.
Since 1990, the Wyndham Cup has brought together 40 of the world’s top junior golfers (20 males and 20 females) in an East versus West team match play tournament. The Wyndham Cup is also known for its iconic host venues. A list that features Old Sandwich Golf Club, Mayacama Golf Club, The Stanwich Club, Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club & Lodge, and Forest Highlands Golf Club - Canyon Course.
Before play, two juniors on each team participated in the ceremonial tee shot. Rayee Feng of Short Hills, New Jersey and Jackson Ormond of Webster, New York, had the honors for the East, while Emerie Schartz of Wichita, Kansas, and Drake Harvey of Las Vegas, Nevada, had the honor for the West.
The West claimed the opening point of the 36th Wyndham Cup after Chase Hughes of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and Jaden Soong of Los Angeles, California, defeated Jessy Huebner of Port St. Lucie, Florida, and Giuseppe Puebla of Royal Palm Beach, Florida, in a hard-fought match.
The West team claimed five victories during the morning foursome session.
- Drew Woolworth of Lake Oswego, Oregon, and Matthew Hull of Corona Del Mar, California, defeated Jackson Ormond of Webster, New York, and Sohan Patel of Weston, Florida, 3&2.
- Landon Ashcraft of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Evan Liu of Rancho Santa Fe, California, earned a 5&4 victory over Andy Dai of Bradenton, Florida, and Sam Carraher of Crown Point, Indiana.
- Anna Fang and Zoe Jiamanukoonkit, both of San Diego, California, posted the largest margin of victory of the session, defeating Kylie Chung of Cumming, Georgia, and Iris Lee of Orlando, Florida, 7&6.
- Grant DeLorenzo of Houston, Texas, and Nicholas Logis of Austin, Texas, won 2&1 over Mingbo Jiang of Orlando, Florida, and Chase Bauer of Gotha, Florida.
- Eliana Saga of Stevenson Ranch, California, and Emerie Schartz of Wichita, Kansas, secured a 2-up victory against Jodie Han of Lewis Center, Ohio, and Rayee Feng of Short Hills, New Jersey.
- The East team earned its first full point of the day when Macie Rasmussen of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Alexandra Phung of Forest Hills, New York, defeated Rina Kawasaki of Palos Verdes Estates, California, and Honorine Ferry of Flower Mound, Texas, 1-up.
The remaining three morning matches ended in ties, with each team receiving a half point per match. As a result, both the East and West teams added 1.5 points to their totals.
Macie Rasmussen of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Alexandra Phung of Forest Hills, New York secured the first point for the East team 1-up over Rina Kawasaki of Palos Verdes Estates, California and Honorine Ferry of Flower Mound, Texas.
Three of the morning matches were tied, giving each team another one and a half point.
The East team mounted a comeback during the afternoon mixed foursomes session, capitalizing on the challenging weather conditions to gain ground on the West.
The opening match started strong for the East, as the pairing of Jessy Huebner and Courtney Grace held the lead through the first six holes. The West's Chase Hughes and Amber Lee responded by taking control through No. 13, but the East battled back down the stretch. Huebner and Grace regained the advantage and held on for a 1-up victory on No.18.
The West answered in the second match, though not without a fight from the East. Chase Bauer and Ava Zhang helped the East grab an early 1-up lead through No. 2. The West pairing of Evan Liu and Zoe Jiamanukoonkit responded by halving the next five holes before moving ahead 1-up through No. 8. The match remained tightly contested throughout the rainy afternoon, but Liu and Jiamanukoonkit took control on the back nine and closed out a 3&2 victory on No.16.
The third match went in favor of the East despite an impressive start from the West. Nicholas Logis and Rina Kawasaki controlled much of the match, holding the lead through the first 15 holes. Andy Dai and Macie Rasmussen mounted a late charge, halving the 16th hole before winning the final two holes to claim a 1-up victory.
Mingbo Jiang and Kylie Chung added another point for the East with a strong performance against Drew Woolworth and Lily Peng. The East pairing maintained control throughout the match and closed out a 2&1 victory.
The final match of the afternoon was forfeited due to illness, resulting in each team receiving half a point.
After day one, West ends on top. Day two of competition at the 36th Wyndham Cup will feature morning four-ball and afternoon mixed foursomes. Morning tee times will begin at 7:30 a.m. off No. 1 at Old Sandwich Golf Club.
