Mr. 61: James White Breaks Record at Ringgold

RINGGOLD, Ga. – James White of Acworth, Ga., posted a record-setting 9-under-par 61 during the American Junior Golf Association’s Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic at WindStone Golf Club Tuesday. The previous AJGA 18-hole scoring record was 62, carded by Stewart Whitt (10-under-par) at the 2002 Burgett H. Mooney, Jr. Rome Classic and Colin Wilcox (9-under-par) at the 2004 Las Vegas Founders Junior Golf Championship.

White, who is ranked 104th in the Polo Golf Rankings, carded nine birdies on the 6,459-yard, par-70 layout. He birdied three times on the front nine (Nos. 4, 8, 9), making the turn in 32 strokes. He then birdied Nos. 10, 12, 13, 14, 16 and 17 to shoot a staggering 29 on the back side.

“To be honest, I hit almost every fairway, every green and made just about every putt,” White said. “You joke about it all the time, but today that’s what I did.”

White’s 9-under par 61 was also the low score of his career, besting his 7-under-par 65 recorded at Brookstone Country Club, his home course in Acworth.

“I didn’t really want to talk about it. I have to thank my playing partners for not mentioning my score and how low I was going,” White said. “Usually if someone asks about it, you then go bogey, bogey, bogey.”

White, a three-year AJGA member, finished tied for 12th at last year’s Ringgold Telephone Company Junior Classic with a 70-69-77—216 tournament total. White’s best finish in AJGA play was a tie for fifth in the 2006 Aldila Junior Classic.

“I had no goals today; sometimes you just have to pull the trigger and go for it. That’s what I’m going to keep doing.”
