This summer, 74 American Junior Golf Association interns are traversing the United States and filling their roles as the backbone of the AJGA.
Each intern is placed on one of seven teams, comprised of seven Operations and two Communications interns. Operations interns are responsible for the set-up, breakdown and execution of each tournament. Their tasks include coordinating event signage, setting the course and communicating with tournament staff, courses and sponsors to create a fantastic tournament experience for AJGA juniors and their families.
Communications interns create and execute social media and promotional plans for the AJGA’s combined 150,000+ followers on Facebook, Instagram, TikTok and X. Communications interns also take extensive photo and video footage of each tournament. All interns monitor pace of play and rules officiate tournament rounds as well. Along with the intern teams, there are seven Tournament Assistants and three Communications Assistants this summer. These returning interns work closely with tournament directors and golf course staff to execute tournaments throughout the season in an elevated role.
Each intern team is on the road traveling weekly to different cities and golf courses for three months straight. The seven teams are conducting a combined 90 tournaments this summer. The teams are projected to travel a grand total of 44,380 miles, pulling a 16-foot trailer with equipment to each tournament. Many interns had never stepped on a golf course prior to starting with the AJGA. After an extensive week of training at the AJGA's National Headquarters, the interns are sent on their way to conduct their first tournament of the season. Numerous backgrounds and experiences are represented in this summer’s class of interns. Interns hail from 27 states, 69 hometowns and represent 64 universities.
It's been more than I could ever hope for. Everything I wanted from the internship I've achieved and then some. I could not have asked for anything more from the AJGA and this experience
When not at the course, interns are able to take advantage of their surroundings and visit many exciting places. So far this summer, intern teams have attended MLB games, visited national parks, toured college campuses, enjoyed amusement parks and explored many other adventures the United States has to offer. Most interns have traveled to areas they've never been to while completing the internship. Traveling on the road for months at a time can seem as a daunting task in the beginning however the memories and bonds created along the way makes it worth the while.
The AJGA Internship has helped me make lifelong connections from the relationships I have built with my teammates. I truly found a family while I was traveling the country this summer and I wouldn't trade it for the world.
The AJGA hires directly from its internship program, with 85% of current full-time employees having completed an internship with the organization. The AJGA internship is also one of the most well-respected in sports, with interns going on to work for organizations including the PGA Tour, LPGA, USGA, TaylorMade, Sun Day Red, Augusta National Golf Club and others.
