AJGA alumnus, Jacob Sosa of Austin, Texas, broke the University of Texas school-record for 18-hole score on Monday at the Southwestern Invitational after firing an 11-under-par 61.
Sosa started his front nine off strong with two eagles on the par-4 No.2 and par-5 No.4. He then carded a birdie on the par-3 No. 8 to make the turn at 5-under-par 31. The Texas freshman kept the momentum going with another birdie on the par-4 No.11. Sosa carded his third eagle of the day on the par-5 No.12. The 19-year-old closed out his bogey-free round with three more birdies on Nos. 15, 17 and 18 to finish the day at 11-under-par 61. Sosa's stellar round led the No. 18 Texas Men's Golf team to an 18-under-par 270 for the opening round. The Texas Men's Golf team opened the second round of play with a five-stroke lead over No. 2 Arizona State.
Sosa had a very successful junior golf career at the AJGA. He was a two-time Rolex Junior All-American and a member of the 2022 Wyndham Cup West Team. Sosa's best AJGA finishes were as Runner-Up at the 2021 Sergio and Angela Garcia Foundation Junior Championship and T2 at the 2021 KJ Choi Foundation Texas Junior Championship presented by Mediheal.
