Eagle Point Golf Club, ranked No. 48 in the top 100 of Golf Digests Best Courses in the Country in 2010, is set to host the annual Wyndham Cup in 2011 (formerly Canon Cup), the American Junior Golf Association announced Wednesday.
Eagle Point is very excited to be able to host this great event, said Club President Bobby Long. This is a unique opportunity for us to showcase our facility and to work hand in hand with the AJGA. We feel certain that it will prove to be a challenging test to all of the participants.
Opened in 2000, the par-72 course tops out at over 7,200 yards and was designed by legendary golf architect Tom Fazio. Set in Wilmington, N.C., the championship layout features several hazards and tough approaches, testing both strategy and execution.
Each year at the Wyndham Cup, the AJGA brings together the nations top 40 juniors in an East-versus-West team match play tournament. The top 10 boys and top 10 girls east of the Mississippi River compete against their counterparts from the west. The teams are chosen based on the Polo Golf Rankings that reward top finishes in national junior golf events.
Notable past players from the East Team include Stewart Cink, Matt Kuchar, Charles Howell III, Cristie Kerr and Morgan Pressel. Past participants from the West include Tiger Woods, Hunter Mahan, Rickie Fowler, Grace Park and Paula Creamer.
The 21st edition of the matchup in 2010 was an exciting event from start to finish. After a back-and-forth battle throughout four-ball, foursome and singles matches, the West used a victory in the final girls single match to secure the win, 25.5 - 24.5. The West Team leads the all-time competition with a 12-8-1 record. The East Team last secured a victory in 2004.
