In honor of Black History Month, we reflect and celebrate African Americans who have made an impact on growing the game of golf. We believe in the importance of embracing diversity and how it directly impacts our commitment to creating an engaging, safe and inclusive environment throughout out organization. This month we highlight Ashley Shaw's success as the first-ever girls division Curry Cup champion.
Shaw competed in the Underrated Golf Tour's inaugural Curry Cup Championship and took home the champion title for the girls division. By securing the champion title, Shaw earned herself an exemption into the Hilton Grand Vacations ANNIKA Invitational presented by Rolex. This exemption later became the 13-year-old's first AJGA Invitational.
The Underrated Golf Tour was created by Stephen Curry as a way to bring more access, equity and opportunity to the game of golf. Shaw says, "It's not only playing on the Underrated Tour and just meeting other people but meeting people who have the same experiences as you do." She shares what her experience was like playing in the event and about the opportunity to meet Stephen Curry. Shaw says, "I love what he does for the game of golf and I'm really excited for this years Underrated Tour."
I found it funny when I walked up to the tee box, he was like "Hi, I'm Steph." and I was like do you really need an introduction?
Shaw began competing in AJGA tournaments in 2021 and earned her first AJGA Qualifier win at the Jim Click Automotive / HSL Properties Championship presented by the Tucson Conquistadores in 2022. The Arizona native shares that it is her dad who inspires her golf game. She plans on playing in more AJGA Invitationals, as well as with the Underrated Golf Tour. Shaw also shared the goals she has set for her future junior golf career.
My dad definitely inspires my game. He doesn't play that much but my parents, they inspire me because they work hard and teach me amazing things everyday. I definitely look up to them and want to be like them one day.
