Weekend Wrap: May 1

Three events in the Junior Golf Hub Preview Series and an Open were contested over the weekend, highlighted by a record-setting performance by Youngin Chun at the Callaway Golf Junior Championship. The four events, finishing on April 30, were held in Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina and Ohio.

Callaway Golf Junior ChampionshipThree-time Rolex Junior All-American Youngin Chun put on a clinic with incredible play at The Country Club of the South en route to her fourth AJGA victory. Her final-round 8-under-par 64 set a new course record at The Country Club of the South and lifted her to a tournament total of 10-under-par 206. The four-time AJGA champion carded eight birdies and no bogeys during her final round to distance herself from the field. Charlie Reiter of Palm Desert, California, provided drama in the Boys Division as he birdied Nos. 16 and 18 to claim a one-stroke victory at 2-under-par 214 over local Andy Mao.

AJGA Preview at Carolina Trace – Ryann Sinclair of Mooresville, North Carolina, capped off a wire-to-wire victory with a birdie on the final hole. Her tournament total of 6-over-par 150 earned a two-stroke victory in the Girls Division. Thailand native Sarut Vongchaisit topped the Boys Division at 3-over-par 147 for a one-stroke victory in Sanford, North Carolina. AJGA Preview at Sugar ValleyIn an event shortened to 18 holes due to inclement weather, Josh DiCarlo of Amherstburg, Ontario, used three birdies to finish at 1-over-par 71 and claim the Boys Division. Jessica Hahn of Canton, Ohio, earned medalist honors in the Girls Division with a 5-over-par 75. 

AJGA Preview at Worthington Manor – Panchalika Arphamongkol of Bangplat, Thailand, carded six birdies to lead the Girls Division field and win her first AJGA event at 1-under-par 143. This was the 15-year-old’s first time in the United States. Jake McCloskey of West Chester, Pennsylvania, fired a final-round 1-over-par 73 to clinch the Boys Division by one stroke. The AJGA Preview at Worthington Manor was recognized in January as the winner of the AJGA’s 2016 Preview of the Year Award.
