Sunday at Muirfield proved to be the perfect setting for Phil Mickelson to capture his fifth major championship title and his first at the Open Championship. In his final round, Mickelson birdied four out of the last six holes, cruising past the final-round competition with a 5-under-par 66. He finished the tournament with the only sub-par score of 3-under-par 281.
His golfing successes thrived at the college level as well, playing for the Arizona State Sun Devils. He was one of only four players to be named first team All-American for four years, 1989-1992. His school record of 16 tournament titles, including NCAA Individual titles in 1989, 1990 and 1992, has yet to be surpassed. Mickelson’s accolades also include three PAC-12 Player of the Year honors and three Haskins Awards.
Jamie Lovemark won the 2013 Midwest Classic Presented by Cadillac after shooting a 5-under-par 66 for a tournament total of 18-under-par 266. This was the second career victory for the 2010 Web.com Tour Player of the Year.
Lovemark played in AJGA events from 2004-2006. He collected two titles, including the 2004 Rolex Tournament of Champions and the 2005 Polo Golf Junior Classic, and five top-10 finishes en route to three Rolex Junior All-America honors.
Beatriz Recari won the Marathon Classic presented by Owens Corning and 0-I after shooting a 5-under-par 66 on Sunday for a tournament total 17-under-par 267. This was Recari’s third professional victory.
Recari played on the European PING Junior Solheim Cup Team in 2005 at The Bridgewater Club in Westfield, Ind. Her tournament record was 1-2-0 in the tournament.
Jordan Niebrugge of Mequon, Wis., won the 88th U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship at Laurel Hill Golf Club. Niebrugge claimed the title with a 1-up victory over Michael Kim of Del Mar, Calif.
A 2011 Rolex Junior All-American, Niebrugge earned seven top-10 finishes in his four-year AJGA career, including T2 at the 2011 Rolex Tournament of Champions and T3 at the 2012 Rolex Tournament of Champions. His junior career was highlighted by two victories at the 2009 Coca-Cola Junior Championship at Boyne Highlands and the 2010 W. Duncan MacMillan Classic at Rush Creek.
Fitzpatrick competed in the 2011 The Junior PLAYERS Championship presented by TaylorMade-adidas Golf. He will compete at Northwestern University in the fall.
Tee-k Kelly of Wheaton, Ill., won the 2013 Illinois State Amateur Championship, beating Jake Erickson and John Watson. In his final found, Kelly recorded four birdies and finished with a tournament total 7-under-par 281.
As a junior, Kelly won the 2011 the Memorial Tournament at Ohio State University Golf Club carding a 1-over-par 214. He recorded eight top-20 finishes in his five-year AJGA career, including two top-three finishes in 2011.
In his freshman season at Ohio State University, Kelly played in all 12 tournaments. He earned three top-20 finishes, including a fourth-place finish at Wolf Run Intercollegiate.
Zachary Olsen of Cordova, Tenn., won the 2013 Southern Amateur after sinking a birdie putt on the first hole of a sudden death playoff. Olsen finished with a tournament total of 12-under-par 276.
A two-time Rolex Junior All American, Olsen has carded seven top-15 AJGA finishes since 2008. He will compete for Oklahoma State University in the fall.
Ally McDonald of Fulton, Miss., defeated Yueer Cindy Feng of Orlando, Fla., 3 and 2, to win the North & South Women’s Amateur title.
As a junior, McDonald earned four top-10 AJGA finishes and tied for third at the 2010 U.S. Girls’ Junior Championship.
