As day one of tournament play comes to a close, Gianna Clemente of Warren, Ohio, leads the Girls Division at 2-under-par 70. She finished the day strong sinking two birdies on the last two holes. She now sits one stroke ahead of the rest of the field.
Along with Clemente, the top five now consists of Kate Brody of Grand Blanc, Michigan, who is second at 1-under-par 71. Madison Spiess of New Albany, Ohio, and Adie Maki of Canton, Michigan are T3 at even-par 72. Cara Heisterkamp of Westlake, Ohio, rounds out the top five at 1-over-par 73.
Over in the Boys Division, Joshua Qian of Westerville, Ohio, and Justin Sui of Lake Orion, Michigan, are tied for the lead after round one at 4-under-par 68. Qian started strong on the front nine with two birdies followed by an even more impressive back nine with a birdie and two eagles. Sui stayed consistent early, finishing the front nine at even par, but he turned it on in the back nine knocking in four birdies.
Evan McDermott of Spring Lake, Michigan, is one-stroke back at 3-under-par 69. August Meekhof of Eastmanville, Michigan, Colin Nasser, of Zionsville, Indiana, and Neil Zhu of Novi, Michigan, are T4 at 2-under-par 70.
