Joe Stover of Cockeysville, Maryland, leads the Boys Division at 6-under-par 66 following round one. The Maryland native had his best tournament in 2019 at the AJGA Preview at Chesapeake Bay where he finished T9. Stover carded six birdies in the round in which four out of the six came during the final nine holes.
At one stroke back, Lorenzo Sanz of Glen Arm, Maryland, shot 5-under-par 67. Sanz tallied five birdies in a row starting on No. 10 and only had one bogey throughout the round. Zach Maloy of Potomac, Maryland, is also in the hunt at 3-under-par 69.
In the Girls Division, Sophie Zhang-Murphy of Saratoga, California, leads at 3-under-par 69. Zhang-Murphy has won three different AJGA events dating back to 2017. She is No. 40 in the Rolex AJGA Rankings.
Julie Shin of Brambleton, Virginia, is in second place at 1-under-par 71. Shin recorded five birdies in the round. Her top-finish was tied for second at the 2019 AJGA Pinehurst Junior. Jade Gu of Yardley, Pennsylvania, and Christina Carroll of Bear, Delaware, are tied for third at 3-over-par.
